I can feel my mascara on my eyelashes
Erin Survilas

My work experiments with my relationship

between girlhood, womanhood, and the

inbetween through oil painting. I paint

mostly with “hyperfemme” concepts and

colors, such as menstruation through a

hot pink lens, or nipples with a pink sparkle

on the tips. I continue to think about past

body image issues, mental health, and

eating disorders to guide my work, as well

as the best and worst parts of being a

woman.

After struggling with eating disorders and a lack of self-love, I realized how vital it was to prioritize self care especially in a time of so much social media influence. From my eating disorder and anxiety, I found painting to be the best way to cope and validate my feelings, as well as relating to many other people’s feelings which created an intimate relationship with the viewers of my work. By painting my body, I found the insecurities and imperfections to be the most exciting details of my paintings. After continuing working with the internal themes of womanhood, I moved onto the external which includes catcalling, the pink tax, and more. I want to portray the frustration of womanhood, as well as romanticizing the small moments of bliss.
